Ngorogoro Conservation Area

The Ngorongoro conservation area is located in the north of Tanzania just west of Arusha. The conservation area measures 8292 km2.The area is dominated by the natural wonder of the Ngorongoro volcanic crater. The crater is a deep unbroken and unflooded caldera, and its spectacular rim is constantly in view as you search for wildlife on the crater floor.

The crater is home to many animals, mainly ungulates including wildebeest, burchell’s zebra, common eland, waterbuck, grant’s and thomson’s gazelles and black rhinoceros to mention but a few. Predators like the leopard and wild dogs also reside here. Ngorongoro also has one of the densest lion populations.
The conservation area authority uses the multiple land use philosophy in the area to maintain the peaceful co-existence of human and wildlife in a natural and traditional setting. Pastoralism, conservation of natural resources, and tourism are the three main components that are given equal consideration in policy shaping decisions.
